Cookie Notice
This Cookie Notice explains how Smash Balloon, LLC (“Smash Balloon”, “we”, “us”, and “ours”) uses cookies and similar technologies to recognize you when you visit the websites of TileSet, a Smash Balloon product, such as https://tileset.com/ and https://app.tileset.com/ (“Websites”). It explains what these technologies are and why we use them, as well as your rights to control our use of them.
What are cookies?
Cookies are small data files containing small amounts of information that are placed on your computer or mobile device when you visit a website. Cookies are widely used by website owners in order to make their websites work, or to work more efficiently, as well as to provide reporting information. Cookies help us to remember things about your visit to our Websites, such as that you are signed in, and generally make the site easier for you to use. They may also be used to deliver advertisements that are relevant to you; TileSet does not use them for that.
Cookies set by the website owner (in this case, Smash Balloon) are called “first party cookies”. Cookies set by parties other than the website owner are called “third party cookies”. Third party cookies enable third party features or functionality to be provided on or through the website (in particular like advertising, interactive content and analytics). The parties that set these third party cookies can recognize your computer both when it visits the website in question and also when it visits certain other websites.
Why do we use cookies?
We use first party cookies, and on tileset.com, only if you allow them, third party analytics cookies, for the reasons below. Some cookies are required for technical reasons in order for our Websites to operate, and we refer to these as “essential” or “strictly necessary” cookies. We use these essential cookies to:
- sign you in to the TileSet dashboard;
- protect your security, including the steps that sign you in and connect a source through its platform’s own sign-in;
- detect and fight spam, abuse and other activities that violate Smash Balloon’s user agreements and terms; and
- authenticate your access to the Websites.
Other technologies remember information about your browser and your preferences. For example, your browser’s local storage remembers the theme you picked (light, dark or automatic) and dashboard notifications you have already seen. Language is chosen by the page address (/de/, /es/), not by a cookie.
We do not use cookies to track or target the interests of our users, and we do not run tests that compare different versions of our Websites with cookies.
No third party serves cookies through our Websites for advertising. On tileset.com, Google Analytics sets analytics cookies only after you allow Statistics in the cookie banner, so we can count visits and see which pages help; it never runs on app.tileset.com, the dashboard, Link in bio pages or widgets. We don’t release the information collected from our own cookies to any third parties, other than to our service providers who assist us in these cookie activities.
The TileSet widgets our customers put on their own websites, and Link in bio pages, set no cookies and store nothing in their visitors’ browsers.
The specific types of first and third party cookies served through our Websites and the purposes they perform are described in the table below:
| Types of cookie | Who serves these cookies | How to refuse |
|---|---|---|
| Strictly Necessary cookies: These cookies are necessary for the website to function and cannot be switched off in our systems. They are usually only set in response to actions made by you which amount to a request for services, such as setting your privacy preferences, logging in or filling in forms. You can set your browser to block or alert you about these cookies, but some parts of the site will not then work. These cookies do not store any personally identifiable information. | Smash Balloon (TileSet) | Because these cookies are strictly necessary to deliver the Websites to you, you cannot refuse them. You can block or delete them by changing your browser settings however, as described below under the heading “How can I control cookies?”. |
| Functional cookies: These cookies enable the website to provide enhanced functionality and personalization. They may be set by us or by third party providers whose services we have added to our pages. If you do not allow these cookies then some or all of these services may not function properly. | ConsentLayer, our consent provider, on tileset.com. Checkout for a paid plan happens on our payment processor’s own pages, which set their own cookies under its own policy. The testimonial form and the emailed sign-in form may use Cloudflare Turnstile, which runs in your browser from Cloudflare’s servers. | To refuse these cookies on TileSet’s Websites only, please follow the instructions below under the heading “How can I control cookies?” |
| Performance cookies: These cookies allow us to count visits and traffic sources so we can measure and improve the performance of our site. They help us to know which pages are the most and least popular and see how visitors move around the site. All information these cookies collect is aggregated and therefore anonymous. If you do not allow these cookies we will not know when you have visited our site and will not be able to monitor its performance. | Google Analytics (Google LLC), on tileset.com only, and only after you allow Statistics in the cookie banner. Google signals and ad personalization are off. | To refuse these cookies on TileSet’s Websites only, please follow the instructions below under the heading “How can I control cookies?” Alternatively, some third parties allow you to refuse their cookies universally by using the relevant opt-out link below: Google Analytics: https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout |
| Targeting cookies: These cookies may be set through our site by advertising partners. They may be used by those companies to build a profile of your interests and show you relevant adverts on other sites. | None. TileSet has no advertising partners. | Nothing to refuse. |
These are the cookies and the items of local storage set on TileSet’s Websites. On app.tileset.com the cookies’ names start with __Host- (for example __Host-sbe_s), a browser rule that keeps them to that one site.

_ga |

sbe_dash_theme |

sbe_notes_ and an account code |

sbe.check-url. and a widget id |
Local storage | TileSet dashboard | The page address you last checked an install on | Until you clear it |
sbe_setup_hide, sbe_setup_check, sbe_setup_bio, sbe_setup_done |
Local storage | TileSet dashboard | Which steps of the getting-started checklist you finished or hid | Until you clear it |
ts-in |
Local storage | TileSet dashboard | That this browser has been signed in, so a signed-out screen is shown only when you really are signed out | Until you sign out |
ts-draft: and a widget id |
Session storage | TileSet dashboard | A widget you are editing and have not saved, so a reload does not lose it | Until you save it or close the tab |
None of these items leaves your device except the cookies. Ours go only to the TileSet site that set them. After you allow Statistics, Google Analytics sends Google the _ga identifiers with the pages you view on tileset.com, the site that sent you, the Start free, install and docs search actions you take there, your browser and device type, and your IP address, which Google uses for an approximate location and does not store. When you make a choice in the banner, it sends ConsentLayer a record of that choice, so there is proof of what you chose and when: the categories you allowed, the banner version, the country your connection comes from, whether your browser sent a Global Privacy Control signal, your browser’s user agent, and a random identifier for that record (not one that follows you). On each page of tileset.com that runs the banner, your browser also asks ConsentLayer’s servers for the country and region of your connection, and tells them the banner loaded, so they receive your IP address with those requests.
What about other tracking technologies, like web beacons?
Cookies are not the only way to recognize or track visitors to a website. Websites may use other, similar technologies, like web beacons (sometimes called “tracking pixels” or “clear gifs”). These are tiny graphics files that contain a unique identifier that enable a website to recognize when someone has visited it or opened an e-mail. TileSet uses no tracking pixels. The TileSet widget does send us a small, anonymous usage signal when it renders, when its lightbox opens, or when a visitor clicks through to the original post. It carries no cookie, no visitor identifier and no session, cannot link two visits to the same person or device, and the visitor’s IP address is never written to it. Our Privacy Notice describes it in full.
Do you serve targeted advertising?
No. No third party serves cookies on your computer or mobile device to serve advertising through our Websites, and we do not use information about your visits to our Websites or other websites to provide advertisements.
How can I control cookies?
You have the right to decide whether to accept or reject cookies. On tileset.com a cookie banner asks for your choice before any cookie that needs your consent is set, and you can change it at any time with the Cookie settings button at the bottom of any page there. If you withdraw your yes, Google Analytics stops at once and its cookies are removed. Your cookie preferences set there will be limited to first and third-party cookies on TileSet Websites only and must be set for each device used to access TileSet Websites.
You can exercise your preferences with some third-party cookies by clicking on the appropriate opt-out links provided in the cookie table above.
You can set or amend your web browser controls to accept or refuse cookies. If you choose to reject cookies, you may still use our website, though your access to some functionality and areas of our website may be restricted: without the sign-in cookies, you cannot sign in to the dashboard. As the means by which you can refuse cookies through your web browser controls vary from browser to browser, you should visit your browser’s help menu for more information.
In addition, most advertising networks offer you a way to opt out of targeted advertising. If you would like to find out more information, please visit http://www.aboutads.info/choices/ or http://www.youronlinechoices.com. For further information on cookies, including how to see what cookies have been set on your device and how to manage and delete them, visit www.allaboutcookies.org.
We do not control any of the above opt-out links and are not responsible for any choices you make using these mechanisms or the continued availability or accuracy of these mechanisms.
How often will you update this Cookie Notice?
We may update this Cookie Notice from time to time in order to reflect, for example, changes to the cookies we use or for other operational, legal, or regulatory reasons. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Notice on our Websites with a new effective date. If we make a material change to this Notice, we will take reasonable steps to notify you in advance of the planned change.
The date at the top of this Cookie Notice indicates when it was last updated.
Where can I get further information?
If you have any questions about our use of cookies or other technologies, please email us at privacy@tileset.com.
